Eating out with children in Stockholm
6 favorites for every little foodie.
If you look beyond the usual fast food outlets, it’s not always easy to find a child-friendly restaurant in Stockholm. There should ideally be a children's menu or the possibility of smaller portions and/or reduced prices for children, space for highchairs, strollers and a spacious WC with diaper changing facilities for babies. An added bonus would be a restaurant with facilities to tempt restless young legs and that they serve really delicious food. Here are seven restaurants for all the family that fit the bill.
Much loved perennial family favorite
Långbro Värdshus
Lunch, dinner or weekend brunch? Långbro Värdshus is always the right choice for all three. A classic restaurant with a roomy and friendly atmosphere with the focus on Swedish cuisine. The restaurant is renowned for its wonderful children’s menu, child-friendly staff and drawing boxes to keep small guests amused. Child portions of all à la carte dishes can be ordered in the evening. In fine weather, older children can play outside in Långbro Park. The same restaurateur runs Restaurang Nationalmuseum in the city center, another child-friendly venue. Booking recommended.
Better burgers for all
Phil’s Burger
If you really want to eat burgers, head to a place where they serve really delicious burgers that adults and kids will both love. Stockholm is packed with ambitious burger chains and Phil’s Burger is no exception. They have six outlets in the inner city. Children are offered pens and puzzle books to occupy them. The children’s menu costs Skr69 and this is the first chain in Scandinavia to serve the Beyond Burger – the world’s first plant based burger that’s said to taste just like meat. Dogs are also welcome.
Family restaurant worth a detour
Astrids
It’s not easy to find child-friendly neighborhood restaurants in Mälarhöjden and Norra Ängby unless you know where to look. Guests are warmly welcome at these family centric places. The food is of high quality in the Italian style. The children’s menu consists of meatballs, pancakes and a couple of more adult-like dishes, such as sea trout in white wine sauce and mashed potato. There’s a playroom that screens videos for restless, younger.
A culinary trip to Thailand
Koh Phangan
The Stockholm restaurant scene includes food from all corners of the world, not least Thai cuisine. The most spectacular Thai restaurant of all is Koh Phangan, that serves ridiculously delicious Thai dishes surrounded by palm trees, flashing neon lights and kitsch bamboo furnishings. When you least expect it, thunder and rain breaks out. It’s all make believe, but just as exciting. Children can choose from a special menu where dishes are served “no hot” with the sauce in a separate bowl. Only a few tables can be reserved, so get there at opening time.
Circus themed tapas restaurant
Pinchos
As a change from burgers and pizza, the Pinchos chain has several outlets in Stockholm and around Sweden. Pinchos is a cash free app restaurant, where guests order food on their smartphone and then collect it when the app pings. Ordering a number of small dishes that don’t cost the earth, is heaven for happy children and equally contented adults. Even the desserts are tapas size, perfect if you can’t make your mind up. The restaurants are circus themed, so there’s always plenty of commotion, to say the least.
Three-star taste for a tenner
The Flying Elk
If you're close to Gamla Stan and fancy a bite at a great gastropub, The Flying Elk is a great choice. The restaurant is run by the same restaurateur behind the Michelin three-star Frantzén. Here, the children’s menu dishes cost just Skr10 per year of the child’s age, a very child-friendly tariff in other words. Sundays are “Izakaya Sundays”, the Japanese equivalent of the British pub Sunday lunch where a three-course meal for Skr295.
