The Verb Hotel – Rockin’ out in Boston

While you may not associate Boston with rock music, the city is in fact the birthplace of a number of successful acts, such as Aerosmith, the Cars, J. Geils, the Pixies, and of course its namesake, Boston. The trendy Verb Hotel celebrates this hallowed heritage with a chic blend of rock nostalgia and nouveau modernarchitecture. As the hotel was originally a one-story roadside motel, the rooms are spacious with retro wood paneling and a laid-back vibe. A number of playful details reinforce the rock n’ roll theme, such as refrigerators housed inside Marshall speakers and record players in each room with loaner albums.

An indoor pool courtyard, open year round, looks out on walls of abstract Mondrianesque colored glass panels.

The hotel is conveniently located in the Fenway district, right around the corner from the oldest baseball park in the US – home of the Boston Red Sox – and just 10 minutes from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Hotel Hive – Living Large on a Small Budget in DC

As Washington D.C. is expensive when it comes to accommodation, the Hotel Hive is a rare find. As a microhotel, the rooms are obviously on the small side (some do however have bunk beds), but Hotel Hive makes up for this with its convenient location, relaxed, down-home atmosphere, and classic minimalistic decor, with brick walls and simple all-white furnishings.

The location in Foggy Bottom, near a busy university, is within walking distance of popular sights like the Lincoln Memorial. But if you prefer to stay at the hotel, the rooftop terrace, bar, and restaurant are hip and lively. Or for quiet contemplation, visit the library and get lost in a good book or flip through the magazines.

On its Instagram page, the hotel offers smart guides to local shops and restaurants that are owned or operated by minorities, such as African Americans or LGBT individuals – a fun way to get to know the American capital on a more personal level.
